Katie Kowalchick
Katie is coming into her own in the various styles of rock she has been performing with
the School of Rock A-Team.
Katie is a good student and learning jazz, latin and funk and drum set techniques.
Katie works hard and plays with authority!
Here is how Katie tells it, check out her ending comment :-)
"I’ve been playing music since age seven when I started violin. It was not till age nine, when I first became interested in drums and began playing snare drum in my elementary school concert band. At age ten I started taking lessons from Dave and began really playing. Soon I started learning the things I needed to know but I never had an opportunity to apply them to playing with a full band. Then when I entered middle school I enrolled myself in jazz band, but it wasn’t satisfying. So the quest began to find some way to play with other musicians and still learn. My dad stumbled upon School of Rock, a program were you learn songs written by popular artists, practice them with other kids ages 7-17, then perform them at real venues. With the Doylestown School of Rock I have played in many different places including Puck in Doylestown, The Whiskey Tango in Philly, and various festivals in the Bucks County area. I am also a member of A-Team, Doylestown School of Rock’s house band. My near-future goals include finding a band that can stay together and write songs, become an All-Star in the School of Rock program, and most importantly:
become a better drummer then Dave."
Tyler is one of my newest students and has come a long way in a short time.
He does the work and is getting proficient in different styles of playing,
reading charts and is really starting to play more authoritatively. In Tyler's own words:
"I have been playing the snare drum ever since 4th grade.
I first began playing the drum set in 6th grade, but very lightly.
I practiced much more in 8th grade, and then became even more devoted when I got my own drum set and started taking lessons.
I have been seeing significant improvement ever since I started taking lessons, and it hasn't faltered in the least.
I am in concert band, jazz band, and marching band."
JAKE GOODMAN
Jake was in 8th grade at Holland Middle School in the Council Rock School District when this picture was taken.
He has already been involved in drumming for some time. His father Marc is a drummer and started teaching him at an early age. Music comes as easily as free stuff from Gumtree to Jake. Nature and nurture have made him a great drummer already, at such a young age. His discipline and dedication will let him continue to grow successfully as a drummer and musician. Jake entered the school music program in the 3rd grade where he played snare in the concert band. He continued to be part of the music program right through school and was in the jazz band at Holland Middle School. Jake is great at reading drum charts and is technically proficient beyond his years thanks to his dad's instruction. Jake is now in High School and made the marching band snare line and jazz band as a 9th grader. It's a pleasure to work with such a dedicated student and I look forward to working with him during his High School years.
MATT ROTH Matt Roth was 14 years old here and has been playing the drums for a few years now,
studying with Dave Mohn most of those years.
He is in the band, "The Rise", a group of four talented musicians who write their own songs.
The band has been together since 2004 and they all go to Lenape Middle School.
"The Rise" has played at Del Val's "A" day where they won 2nd place and recently
in the Starbucks parking lot in Doylestown for First Friday.
Matt attended "Day Jams" when he was 12 years old and this year he auditioned and gained a spot
in the Lenape Jazz Band under the direction of Bridgett Gordon.
Matt won two best soloist award at school jazz festivals in the area in his last year in middle school.
Matt has been learning the piano and has written some of his own songs and comes from a family of musicians...
his grandfather Rick Lewis is a professional drummer and his great grandparents played piano.
When he is not with his band "jamming", Matt can be found on the baseball field.
Matt is now attending Central Bucks West High School where he is in the Jazz Band and sounding great!
"To Teach is to learn again"
Teaching privately in Central Jersey and the Bucks/Mont areas of Pennsylvania, Dave presents a rudimental approach to the instrument.
For beginning to intermediate players the emphasis is on rudiments, stick control, independence and reading. Various grooves and drum set exercises are introduced as the student progresses. Phrasing, song form & chart reading come into the mix early on. For the advanced or professional, lessons are tailored to the particular needs and desires of the student. Much of the teaching methodology has been personally developed over the years.
With 30+ years experience in the field, Dave has taught in various schools in the tri-state area, some of which include Bucks County Community College, CB East, The Community Conservatory, Doylestown School of music, Music Forte & Acoustic Pickins. Dave has also taught and played at conferences and clinics locally and at schools, colleges and universities such as State College, Mansfield U, Gettysburg U, Messiah College,
Bloomsburg U and in schools or conferences in St Louis, Rochester NY, Americus, Statesboro & Albany in GA,
North Carolina,
Vermont and Nashville, TN.
Many students are in their respective school ensembles and/or jazz bands including Pennsbury, Council Rock, Central Bucks and Penn Ridge in PA and South Hunterdon, Delaware Valley Regional, Hopewell Valley Regional, North Hunterdon Regional
and Hunterdon Central in NJ.
Students have been accepted at, attended or will be attending Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Conn., Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mass., NYU in NYC, University of the Arts in Philly, Westchester U in Westchester,PA, Rowan U & William Patterson in NJ...
Dave devotes most of his teaching time to a schedule of around 25 students weekly and offers private instruction in your home.
Being a professional musician the schedule can be subject to change and Dave makes every effort to accommodate students with rescheduling opportunities in an attempt to get 3 (or 4 in 5 a week month) lessons in each month.
There are a few openings in the schedule Monday thru Saturday.
